Disappointment and 30 Day Shred

This past week was full of disappointment.  This past week I could no longer ignore the pain in my knee after as I ran and after I ran.  The pain started as very faint after I ran in my right knee.  As of last week, it was a constant sore feeling when I ran that continued the next day/s after I ran.  As I was trying to kneel down to get on the floor with kids at my job it was really bad.  I had to seek some advice on whether to keep running was the right thing to do (I already really knew in my head that what I was feeling wasn't normal).  After discussing it, it was decided that I needed to take a break from running for a couple of week, then start with a short run and see how it feels and go from there. 

I was so disappointed.

I was up to running 4 straight miles, something I have never done and that 10k was actually feeling like something I could accomplish.  However, having had family member who have had knee and hip problems from running I knew that it was not something I wanted to ignore and end up permanently injured. I decided to not be stubborn and go with the advice I had been give.  I am currently taking a break from my 10k training.  I am going to try a short run (like 1-2 miles) on the track around Sunday after almost a week and half off and see how it feels.  

I normally would have used this as an excuse to completely throw in the towel and be done until my knee was better, which would have ended up being well after it was better.  I have decided to try to 30 Day Shred and see how that fairs with my knee.  I did the first workout yesterday and I didn't feel the knee pain during or after the workout, so that is a good sign. My knee is still somewhat sore, but I can feel the difference between the original soreness and it hurting from new impact, so to speak.

  1. Good luck with the 30 Day Shred! I started it in July, managed 2 weeks and then we had a heatwave kick in and I just couldn't stick with it, it was way too hot and humid! I plan to get back on it this weekend, fingers crossed.

  2. I'm sorry you are having knee issues.. especially when you were running so far (and WOW, kudos to you). I have bad knee issues myself that keep me from running and it's always been something I wished I could do. Hopefully it will get better soon. Coming from the medical family that I do, and having had all the Orthopedic issues that I have.. I will give you some advice: R.I.C.E! Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. Feel better soon and take gentle care!! XO

  3. Jillians work outs CAN be pretty hard on the knees depending on what your knee pain level is. But her workouts are also awesome!

  4. yeah, don't mess with joints; if it's hurting then it's best to stop. instead of running, why not try hiking some trails? THAT is an excellent workout as the uneven terrain and hills/incline totally kick up the intensity and gives you a great cardio workout as well.

  5. Bless your heart, that's no fun! I'm glad your taking a break from running though. Joints can be tricky things and need thier rest. Good luck and will be thinking about you this week.

  6. Good luck with the 30 Day Shred. I have recently completed it, and it is a great work out. Great for toning the abs and arms. My only suggestion would be to be careful in level 3. There are a few moves I changed out to moves from level 2 because my knee couldn't handle it. She is also good about telling you how to modify for knee problems.

  7. I have knee problems too and they are definitely from running. After I ran a half marathon I knew I honestly should not do it again. So I won't! Now I run but no more than 3-4 miles at a time and I love hiking. The 30 day shred is intense! Good luck! I never made it past 6 days. Haha :)

  9. Good Luck! Injuries can give you an excuse to not workout and I am proud of you for trying something different for a little while. That is an amazing accomplishment - not making your knee an excuse! I love the 30 Day Shred!

  12. Yes, it's good to rest your knee with the increasing pain. You don't want to completely damage it. If it doesn't bother your knee walk or hike the 4 miles for a while.

  14. Last fall as I was training for a half marathon I had terrible IT band trouble. If there's anything I've learned it's that sometimes pain is your body's only way of telling you to take a break. You'll be right back at it, and it will eventually just be a blip in the radar. :)

  15. Yes, that kind of pain is never good. Hope it gets better soon. The 30 day shred is a really good workout! Biking and hiking are some of my favorites to for cross training.

  16. Sorry about the knee pain. Hope it gets better soon! I really need to pick up and do the 30 Day Shred again. I stopped after 2 weeks. Major fail. Good luck with 30DS for you!

  17. The 30 Day Shred is awesome! I know its disappointing but as long as you are moving forward and getting work out time in you are doing GREAT!!! Good job on not throwing in the towel! THAT is when you are a changed woman! :)

  19. I can relate. I have some knee injuries too. I'm trying to put off orthoscopic surgery right now. I hate to even have to think about how long that would keep me out of most excercises. I've wanted to try the 30 Day shred but some of her cardio, like jumping jacks and jumping rope is torture on my knees :( So be careful. Hope it gets better soon.

  23. So sorry to hear about the pain! I find that when my quads are strongest I have the least knee pain (and I have really crappy knees). I hope that 30 day shred does wonders for you, and that your knee heals pronto!
